This is my longterm review of the Magmod system. The views and thoughts expressed are my own and I’m not being paid by Magmod for this post. However, the links to products within this post are affiliate links where I may earn a small commission from Amazon for purchases.
Simple light set up - 2 Godox AD200s on lightstands with Magspheres
Background
In April 2017, I attended my first ever photography conference (Shutterfest in St. Louis) and while there learned about the Magmod system for the first time after seeing it demonstrated in a class. I was hooked! The ease and configurability of the system is what sold me. Plus it gives a pretty different look than what I had been doing with on-camera flash pointed at ceilings.
Flash modifiers have been around for a long time, but they have always been cumbersome, awkward, and frustrating to use. Professional photographer Spencer Boerup was tired of dealing with velcro straps and flimsy plastic, so in 2013, he decided to create a new system. Using the power of magnets, Boerup launched a Kickstarter campaign for what would become the Magmod system, a revolutionary magnetic flash modifier ecosystem. He successfully raised over double his initial goal, proving that photographers were hungry for a faster, easier, and more reliable way to shape their light.
Single light setup - Maxbox 24” and an AD200
A dark boring hallway transformed by Magmod - Using the 24”Magbox upfront to light her and then 4 flashes in the background with Mag gels - green, yellow, magenta, and purple.
Another hallway area transformed by Magmod - Magbox upfront with 1 AD 200 behind her with a red Mag gel.
I’ve used the Magmod system for everything from simple 1 light setups, to setups using 4 or 5 flashes. A lot of it depends on how much time I have and the locations, but no matter the scenario, magmod makes getting stunning images easy.
Magmod makes sunset magic - 1 AD200 with a Magsphere
The Magmod ecosystem consists of several key components that work together flawlessly. The foundation is the MagGrip, a durable silicone band with powerful magnets that attaches to almost any flash. Once the MagGrip is on your flash, you can instantly attach any of the other modifiers. The MagSphere is a fantastic light diffuser, turning harsh light into a softer, omnidirectional source for beautiful portraits. The MagGrid is a honeycomb grid that focuses your light into a narrow beam, perfect for dramatic spotlighting.
For most people, I’d recommend getting this basic starter kit shown below that will really help you start shaping your light creatively.
Magmad at an engagement session - 1 AD200 behind with a magsphere, and 1 in front with a magsphere
To get the most out of your Magmod system, start by mastering the basics. For a clean, flattering look, use the MagSphere as your go-to modifier for on-camera flash at events and receptions. When you need to create a more focused and dramatic effect, swap it out for the MagGrid to direct light exactly where you want it to go, eliminating unwanted spill. Don't be afraid to experiment! The beauty of the system is that you can stack modifiers—try combining a MagGrid with a MagGel to create a dramatic, colored spotlight on your subject.
Magmod at night - I had a small led so my camera could find focus, and then used 3 Godox TT600’s with Orange, Blue, and Purple gels in the back, and 1 AD200 in front with a Magsphere. This tree line was a significant area for the bride so she requested a creative shot with it.
One thing I’ll add about the TT600 flashes is, they are so affordable - we own 8 of them!
The Magmod system is more than just a collection of accessories; it's an investment in a faster, more creative, and less frustrating workflow. The secure magnetic attachment means you'll spend less time fumbling with gear and more time capturing incredible moments. Its durable, flexible silicone design can withstand the rigors of a professional shoot, so you can stop worrying about breaking your equipment. If you're ready to take complete control of your flash and unleash your creative vision, it's time to buy into the Magmod ecosystem.
