Mel’s Sweet TREATS; DECATUR ALABAMA BAKERY

Welcome to my first installment of “Local Spotlight”. In this series I will be featuring local businesses in the Decatur Alabama area. Today we’re getting started with one of the most well known businesses in Decatur!

In the historic Decatur Albany district stands a modest brick building at 1051 Grant Street SE. Erected in 1927, this structure has witnessed nearly a century of change, serving various roles from a neighborhood market to a series of eateries. As of mid-2024, it houses Mel's Sweet Treats, a bakery that has become a cherished part of the community. Mel’s Sweet Treats has always been a popular spot for those confectionary delights. However in 2025 when the Dubai Cup craze took over the world, it landed this local bakery in the spotlight! I recently had the chance to stop by the new location and check it out. While there, I picked up a few delicious treats to try and also photograph!

The soul behind Mel's Sweet Treats is Melissa Cook. In 2003, Melissa transformed her passion for baking into a business, starting with humble beginnings and a dream. Over the years, her dedication to quality and community has helped her dream come true. Her creations, from the classic chocolate chip to the inventive Tiramisu cookies, and the current Dubai craze have garnered a loyal following.

Beyond the delectable offerings, Mel's Sweet Treats is known for its warm atmosphere and friendly service. Melissa and her team have created a space where patrons feel like family, often engaging in conversations and remembering regulars by name. With a 4.6-star rating from over 200 Google reviews, it's clear that Melissa's bakery delivers on its goods.

When I got home with all these treats, all the kids were excited. Within 48 hours all of them had been devoured and everyone was begging for more! We will be visiting again soon for another sweet haul of baked goods from Mel’s Sweet Treats. If you’re in Decatur Alabama and need some sort of sweet treat, this is definitely a place to check out!
